Did you miss the opening party for Barrique, featuring a  collection of re-purposed oak wood wine barrel luxury furniture manufactured by Premium SCM Group Woodworking Machinery? Here’s a link to the MODA slideshow that will let you experience it virtually.

The upcoming Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) event Barrique: Wine, Design & Social Change, taking place September 15 – October 13  in Atlanta, GA, features a collection of re-purposed oak wood wine barrel luxury furniture manufactured by Premium SCM Group Woodworking Machinery that were  used to re-purpose the wooden barrels into the featured designs crafted in the San Patriganano carpentry shop.

“Barrique” (meaning barrell) refers to the exhibits high-end home décor designed by over 30 renowned international designers, including Daniel Libeskind, Marc Sadler, Karim Rashid, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Angela Missoni, Chiara Ferragamo.

The “Social Change” element, references the fact that the furniture was crafted in conjunction with over 200 of the rehabilitation residents of San Patrignana,–Europe’s largest and most successful drug treatment program for struggling young men and women, which has supported over 20,000 people over its 30 year history.

The display is also a part of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ “Year of Italian Culture” in the United States.  Held in conjunction with “Barrique -The Third Life of Wood”  U.S. tour—the tour officially launched  in May 2013, as part of New York Design Week.

Conceived by San Patrignano and Italian wood designer Maurizio Riva, after Riva visited the Community in 2012, the “Barrique” recycling initiative offers tour visitors an opportunity to view and purchase unique pieces of Italian Craftsmanship, repurposed from San Patrignano’s winery barrels (that would otherwise be destroyed).  Proceeds from the sales will go to  support San Patrignano’s mission to rehabilitate drug users in a home environment, by offering various educational programs, healthcare, legal assistance and a variety of specialized vocational training courses, including woodworking, while boosting the self-worth of its 1,300 residents.

Featuring two activities of the community – excellent winemaking and a joiner’s workshop equipped with “Premium” machines by Scm Group in Rimini  – the event initially resulted in a project called “Le botti rinascono a San Patrignano” – “The barrels are reborn in San Patrignano” a project designed to refurbish the wood of the exhausted 230 liter French oak barrels of the 450,000 liter yearly yield of the prestigious wines of San Patrignano into lamps, furniture, doors, games for children, armchairs, chairs, tables etc.

San Patrignano and SCM Group“It ‘s a privilege for us to be part of this great adventure of San Patrignano and the” made in Italy “in the United States,” said Adriano Aureli (?), CEO of SCM Group. “An opportunity to witness, first, our support and our thirty-year friendship with San Patrignano and his workshop, where our machines are at home. But it is also a way for us to be close to great and inspiring universe of design, demonstrate what we believe, our desire to offer tools that allow a great idea to become a great product. And ‘this is our task: to collaborate because a dream, a thought can become real. Make life better, make it more beautiful … a miracle in San Patrignano comes to life every day! And not just talking about furniture or wine, but of people … “.
