Starting in early May, “Barrique -The Third Life of Wood” repurposed oak wood wine barrel luxury furniture and design collaboration of renowned architects and designers will be touring the US. from May through October 2013 - Full list of touring cities featured at the end of this article.
Beginning in Boston on May 7-8 before officially launching in New York on May 18th during Design Week, the “Barrique” (meaning barrell) will exhibit high-end home décor designed by over 30 leading designers, including Daniel Libeskind, Marc Sadler, Karim Rashid, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Angela Missoni, Chiara Ferragamo, in conjunction over 200 the rehabilitation residents of San Patrignana, Europe’s largest and most successful drug treatment program for struggling young men and women that has supported over 20,000 people over its 30 year history.
Conceived by San Patrignano and Italian wood designer Maurizio Riv, after Riva visited the Community in 2012, the “Barrique” recycling initiative offers tour visitors an opportunity to view and purchase unique pieces of Italian Craftsmanship, that were repurposed from San Patrignano’s winery barrels (that would otherwise be destroyed), while supporting San Patrignano’s mission to rehabilitate drug users in a home environment by offering various educational programs, healthcare, legal assistance and a variety of specialized vocational training courses, including woodworking, while boosting the self-worth of its 1,300 residents.
Featuring two activities of the community – excellent winemaking and a joiner’s workshop equipped with “Premium” machines by Scm Group in Rimini – the event initially resulted in a project called “Le botti rinascono a San Patrignano” – “The barrels are reborn in San Patrignano” a project designed to refurbish the wood of the exhausted 230 liter French oak barrels of the 450,000 liter yearly yield of the prestigious wines of San Patrignano into lamps, furniture, doors, games for children, armchairs, chairs, tables etc.
A top partner of the event, SCM Group in Rimini has a long standing relationship with San Patrignano, along with a number of other international companies, including Friends of San Patrignano, Foundation for Italian Art & Culture, ICE, Italy-America Chamber Of Commerce, Mediterranean Shipping Company, Fondazione Bracco, Intesa Sanpaolo, Poltrona Frau, that have helped support their mission and goals.

“Barrique: The Third Life Of Wood” is also part of the official 2013 program for the Year of Italian Culture in The United States – a series of events that include more than a hundred events and cultural initiatives, celebrating Italian excellence, culture, industry, artisanship and identity, organized and promoted under the Patronage of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Italy In Washington D.C.
