Part 2: Looking Back at Woodworking Education in America – Circa 1906-1908

Part two of our look back at woodworking education in America  – circa 1906 -1908 – continues while we are away from the office, attending IWF Atlanta 2012

Description: When the secondary schools, constituting University High, were brought together in 1901, the agreement stated that the Chicago Manual Training School should constitute the “technical courses” and enjoy a measure of independence in pursing its aims, clear thought, honest work, and willpower through work with one’s hands.

Industry put pressure on schools such as this to concentrate on vocational training, but Dean Henry Holmes Belfield, a Latin scholar, believed deeply in shop work and mechanical drawing as an important part of the college preparatory curriculum.

Note the poem with the uplifting message that the teacher has written on the black board . . .

Wouldn’t life be a lot more happy
if we praised the good we see?

For there’s such a lot of goodness
in the worst of you and me.

Wouldn’t it be nice to practice
that fine way of thinking too?

Now you know something good about me
And I know something good about you
