Part 1: Looking Back at Woodworking Education in America – Circa 1906-1908

This week, while we are focused on the future of woodworking machinery and manufacturing technology at IWF Atlanta, we are also taking a look back . . .  to a manual training wood shop in Belfield Hall, at the University of Chicago-Labooratory Schools, circa 1906-1908.

Manual Training at the University of Chicago Elementary School

In  1896, John Dewey, chairman of the University of Chicago’s  Department of Philosophy, Psychology and Pedagogy (holistic science of education), began the Laboratory School, an experimental elementary school.  It was Dewey’s belief that manual education kept children alert and active, in addition to encouraging teamwork.  Both boys and girls practiced woodworking,  basketry, cooking, sewing, clay modeling, printing and book binding.

In this  photo of a student activity class at the Laboratory School of the University of  Chicago, note the leather flat belts connected to the under floor line shaft, driving the table and band saws and planer. Over head lighting was adjusted via the noose-like light cords, a a part of the exposed electrical wiring system.
