1. Quality:
Striebig has long been known as the standard of quality in vertical panel saws. They are Swiss engineered and built by a company whose only business has been vertical panel saws for over 50 years.2. Accuracy, Squareness & Quality of Cut:
Each Striebig machine is set-up and tested at the factory in Luzern, Switzerland to ensure its accuracy to .004″ and to guarantee perfectly square, chip free cuts that are either ready to glue up or go to the edgebander.

3. Material Handling and Operator Ease:
The heavy-duty panel rollers are the key here. They permit loading and positioning of even the heaviest of panels with minimal effort. There is no need to raise and lower the rollers just to move the panel a little to the left or right. They also enable one person to “flip” a sheet by himself if he needs to have a trimmed edge on the bottom reference surface. There is also the smooth plunge and counterbalance of the saw head, and overall smooth travel of the saw in the cutting operation. They are difficult to quantify, but easy to feel, like the feel of a great sports car!

4. Durability:
Obsolescence is not built in. Just ask someone who has been using his Striebig (and cutting square) for the last 20 years. They just keep running and running, some of them in the harshest environments!

5. Versatility:
No other vertical saw manufacturer has the range of frame sizes and variety of features and options available. True split-blade scoring, angle cutting, digital measuring, programmable positioning, dado cutting, V-grooving, and lifting system that allows trimming of the bottom edge without flipping the panel. We’ve got it!

6. Simplicity:
Controls and operation are simple and logical. They are engineered so that it is difficult for an operator to use it improperly or unsafely, or to damage it. The learning curve is almost nonexistent. It takes about an hour to train most people to use the machine.

Additionally, Weima has once again, teamed with AWFS Fair (Wednesday, July 24 – Saturday, July 27) to host a recycling program throughout the show, by providing a shredding system for grinding the demonstration wood scrap, and discarded shipping and packing materials used by the exhibitors and vendors.  The wood chips will then be donated be donated for landscaping at the UNLV Community Garden through the partnership and efforts of the non-profit organization Repurpose America.

The Frequency Wall by Bloomlab @Ligna 2013

The structure was inspired by the frequency of the sound waves generated by the noise of cutters as they work the wood, perfectly reproduced by the fascinating assembly of over 850 different shapes.

Constructed with poplar OSB (Oriented strand board) by IPan, the wall was manufactured by Naldini Arredamenti, and machined with an SCM Tech Z5 -  5 Axis CNC Router.

Beginning in Boston on May  7-8 before officially launching in New York on May 18th during Design Week, the “Barrique” (meaning barrell) will exhibit high-end home décor designed by over 30 leading designers, including Daniel Libeskind, Marc Sadler, Karim Rashid, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Angela Missoni, Chiara Ferragamo, in conjunction over 200 the rehabilitation residents of San Patrignana, Europe’s largest and most successful drug treatment program for struggling young men and women that has supported over 20,000 people over its 30 year history.

Conceived by San Patrignano and Italian wood designer Maurizio Riv, after Riva visited the Community in 2012, the “Barrique” recycling initiative offers tour visitors an opportunity to view and purchase unique pieces of Italian Craftsmanship, that were repurposed from San Patrignano’s winery barrels (that would otherwise be destroyed), while supporting San Patrignano’s mission to rehabilitate drug users in a home environment by offering various educational programs, healthcare, legal assistance and a variety of specialized vocational training courses, including woodworking, while boosting the self-worth of its 1,300 residents.

Featuring two activities of the community – excellent winemaking and a joiner’s workshop equipped with “Premium” machines by Scm Group in Rimini  – the event initially resulted in a project called “Le botti rinascono a San Patrignano” – “The barrels are reborn in San Patrignano” a project designed to refurbish the wood of the exhausted 230 liter French oak barrels of the 450,000 liter yearly yield of the prestigious wines of San Patrignano into lamps, furniture, doors, games for children, armchairs, chairs, tables etc.

A top partner of the event, SCM Group in Rimini  has a long standing relationship with San Patrignano, along with a number of other international companies, including Friends of San Patrignano, Foundation for Italian Art & Culture, ICE, Italy-America Chamber Of Commerce, Mediterranean Shipping Company, Fondazione Bracco, Intesa Sanpaolo, Poltrona Frau, that have helped support their mission and goals.

It probably is not surprising to anyone reading this that the major objective of a cabinet shop, flooring mill, or even your own operation is not to produce sanding dust from organic rectangular parallelepipeds from truncated cones, but rather is to make money.

So, how are we going to make more money in the future? Putting more wood products into the market, that is, increasing production, is not the solution for increasing profits for the future. Remember the statement I have made before that you can make cabinets or furniture all day, but you do not make any profit until they are sold. So, rather, we need more demand, a demand that exceeds the market size we had ten years ago.

At the 2013 Milan Furniture Show, SCM Group (in collaboration with FederLegno, the branch of the Italina Manufacturers Association) highlighted the transformation between handmade furnishing to digital crafting using an SCM Tech Z5 5 axes CNC Machining Center.  The I Wood Like initiative highlighted how wood is processed — from raw material to finished product.

Thomas A Johnson

After arriving in the U.S. from his native country of Ghana with only $20 in his pocket, Johnson dreamed of starting a woodworking school that would train American Master Craftsmen that could compete in a global market place while advancing the rich legacy of American woodworking .

In light of the mounting shortage of skilled workers that American woodworking manufactures are facing today, Johnson’s current goal of raising 1 million dollars to establish the Thomas A. Johnson School of American Woodworking at Mayflower Landing in Virginia, is both highly challenging and admirable.

Johnson’s goal is to transform a 31 acre lumber yard with a 135,000 square foot facility he purchased three years ago into a state of the art woodworking school that would train individuals in the fine art of woodworking.  Moreover, the program will equip students with the necessary skills and experiences to create exceptional new work and foster a greater appreciation and desire for American made woodworking in America and worldwide.

Specifically, contributions will go toward constructing new classrooms and purchasing equipment and materials for the woodworking school, as well as student recruitment, and converting existing structures on the property into classroom buildings, studios and an exhibit hall.

Tax-deductible contributions can be made through June 10 to establish the Thomas A. Johnson School of American Woodworking at Mayflower Landing in Virginia, by donating online via USA Projects, an Internet platform that seeks to invest in America’s artists.
