Wooden Pininfarina Cambiano Concept Car

This  wooden replica of the Cambiano Concept car—designed by Pininfarina—was  created by Riva 1920, an Italian solid wood furniture manufacturer established in the early 1920′s.  Constructed entirely in Briccola of Venice, with the use of SCM Group CNC woodworking machinery technology.

Elected “the most beautiful concept car of 2012 Geneva Motor Show” the Cambiano by Pininfarina features the wood of the briccole, the posts of European oak used to mark the navigation channels in the Venice lagoon, on the floor and the entire lower cabin.

The Briccola wood of Venice, Italy is marked by the lagoon water and by marine microorganisms, which come alive again, through the ingenious use of numerical controlled SCM milling machines, manual final polishing and oiling.

• Edge pressure is applied by eight (8) each pusher shoes, each with a 4” bore x 4” (100 x 100 mm) stroke twin-piston multi-power pneumatic cylinders.
• Top platen pressure is applied by two (2) 5” diameter x 16” (125 x 406 mm) stroke pneumatic cylinders that keeps the footprint to a minimum while still allowing the operator full access to the platen area.
• The platen is set at a 45-degree angle and the top platen opens wide; allowing the operator to step inside the press for ergonomic and accurate parts placement.
• The internal solid state RfsProtech 4kW Radio Frequency Generator cures approximately 400 square inches of glue line per minute. (2580 cm²)
• The Generator features solid state rectifiers and all aluminum cabinet for maximum conductivity and superior performance.
• Two-hand no-tie-down safety controls for closing the top platen.
• Controls are simple to understand, and are complete with the required push-buttons, switch, meters, digital operator display, and on-screen troubleshooting diagnostics.
• The machine is controlled by a PLC for dependability and efficient maintenance. All controls will be provided for safe and efficient operation. The operator screen permits efficient operation, and the included press diagnostics screens assist in trouble-shooting when the need arises.
• Proper interfaces will be provided for operational signals and emergency system stop.

May 15, 2012 – Builder confidence in the market for newly built, single-family homes gained five points in May from a downwardly revised reading in the previous month to reach a level of 29 on the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI), released today. This is the index’s strongest reading since May of 2007.

“Builders in many markets are reporting that buyer traffic and sales have picked back up after a pause this April,” said Barry Rutenberg, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and a home builder from Gainesville, Fla. “It seems we have resumed the gradual upward trend in confidence that started at the beginning of this year, as stabilizing prices and excellent affordability encourage more people to pursue a new-home purchase.”

“While home building still has quite a way to go toward a fully healthy market, the fact that the HMI has returned to trend is an excellent sign that firming home values, improving employment and low mortgage rates are drawing consumers back,” said NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. “The pace of this emerging recovery could be stronger were it not for the significant impediments that the market continues to face with regard to builder and consumer access to credit, inaccurate appraisals, and more recently, rising materials prices.”

Derived from a monthly survey that NAHB has been conducting for 25 years, the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index gauges builder perceptions of current single-family home sales and sales expectations for the next six months as “good,” “fair” or “poor.” The survey also asks builders to rate traffic of prospective buyers as “high to very high,” “average” or “low to very low.” Scores from each component are then used to calculate a seasonally adjusted index where any number over 50 indicates that more builders view conditions as good than poor.

Each of the index’s components rebounded from declines in the previous month. The component gauging current sales conditions and the component gauging traffic of prospective buyers each rose five points in May to 30 and 23, respectively, with the traffic component hitting its highest level since April of 2007. The component gauging sales expectations in the next six months rose three points to 34.

Three out of four regions registered improving builder sentiment in May. This included a six-point gain to 32 in the Northeast, and five-point gains to 27 and 28 in the Midwest and South, respectively. The West posted a two-point decline, to 29.

The HBD Series of Horizontal Bore, Glue, Dowel and Hardware insertion machines are numerically controlled machines to drill, glue and insert dowels on horizontal and vertical pieces. The OMAL system of bore and dowel yields a cycle time of approximately ONE second for each bore, glue and dowel insertion when holes are on 32mm intervals. If integrated top drill is added, this defaults to 64mm. The HBD can be ordered at 64, 96, or 128. “Indexable Center and Side Fences” The selection of the loading zone (left, left center, right center, or right) is executed by CNC and automatic based on the size or if using bar coding. The center reference is excludable on the 1300 (50” work table) and the center and side references are excludable on the 1550. Process up to a 10’ panel using alternate referencing!

“No Drip Glue Nozzle” Omal utilizes a stainless steel pin and nozzle assembly, precisely machined with a reinforced tip to insure water/glue does not leak. Omal uses a 3 seal system to keep glue from seeping back through the needle seal and into the electrovalve. Omal supports programmable electronic control of glue amount. The injector unit is equipped with an inductive sensor to verify glue is shot.

Woodworking Associations Reach Agreement To Own IWF Atlanta

May 2, 2012, Delray Beach, Florida – The Woodworking Machinery Industry Association (WMIA), the Wood Machinery Manufacturers of America (WMMA) and the American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA) jointly announced today that they have entered into an agreement for the purchase of AHFA’s ownership interest in the International Woodworking Fair (IWF) by WMIA and WMMA. The transaction is expected to close late this year following IWF 2012. In addition, WMIA and WMMA announced that they have entered into a new partnership agreement for the management and ownership of IWF.

The year 2012 signifies a long and formidable joint venture partnership between the AHFA, WMIA and WMMA for IWF. For the past thirty years the three associations have jointly operated one of the most successful trade shows in North America. The agreements confirm the intentions of the three associations to solidify the ownership and operation of the Western Hemisphere’s largest woodworking equipment trade fair, and their commitment to the woodworking industry as a whole. “We believe that IWF is an important part of the continued success of the woodworking industry”, stated WMIA President, John Henderson. “Our decision is not only good for the thousands of woodworkers in North America and abroad who attend IWF but also for the numerous companies that produce machinery, cutting tools and various supplies and exhibit at IWF.”

“The IWF is an important event that allows woodworkers the opportunity to see the suppliers they purchase their machinery and other products from – and ask them direct questions”, explained WMMA President, Mark Chappell. “Attendees also see first hand new technology in action and new equipment being introduced to the marketplace; all in one location.” The IWF has a long history of bringing thousands of people together to share ideas, develop initiatives and witness the world’s best woodworking products. “AHFA has enjoyed a long and productive partnership with the WMMA and WMIA. We know IWF will continue to be a vibrant and relevant event under their joint ownership”, stated AHFA Vice Chairman and IWF Board member, Wyatt Bassett.

The IWF Fair will carry on the tradition set in place by the original three associations and yet change to answer the needs of today’s marketplace. The WMIA and the WMMA are excited about the future of the IWF, ready to join forces and are initiating plans to expand the size of the show for the betterment of the global industry.

We thought this short film from the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Forest Service which was made in 1942 during World War II would be an interesting addition for our History of Woodworking and Sustainable Woodworking & Green Construction blog archives.  Featuring forest production and its strategic importance during wartime

The blaring music, booming narrator and overblown narrator are typical of 1940′s style U.S. Government films.   And initially the film focuses on to the various uses of wood in the war, principally as replacements for items that Americans needed to go without. For instance, if all the steel forks, spoons and toiletries had to go, they could have wood replacements.  If the military needed wool or cotton to make uniforms, wood could provide adequate clothing substitutes.

“But there is a deadly enemy of wood you, ” the narrator declares . . .  its carelessness in throwing away cigarettes and not extinguishing campfires is a deadly enemy to wood, which could cause tons of valuable war supplies (the lumber) to be be destroyed.

However, despite the films seemingly intended use of “preventing forest fires”  there is still some very good footage of 1940′s forestry, mills, logging trucks, and wood production.

In thousands of manufacturing facilities all over the United Sates the threat of combustible dust is very real.   The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OWHA) has identified more than 15,000 companies that are considered high risk for combustible dust explosions and/or fires. The concern is significant enough that OSHA created a National Emphasis Program (NEP). The market segment receiving the largest number of inspections, and by default the most citations, is the wood manufacturing industry. By the numbers alone, OSHA has identified wood dust and manufacturers that create wood dust as a prime concern. WASHINGTON, March 23, 2012 —Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s final Planning Rule for America’s 193-million acre National Forest System that includes stronger protections for forests, water, and wildlife while supporting the economic vitality of rural communities.

This final rule – which follows USDA’s Feb. 3 publication of the Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement – replaces the 1982 rule procedures currently in use, and provides a new framework to be used for all individual management plans for 155 national forests and grasslands across the country. Over half of Forest Service units are currently operating with plans that are more than 15 years old.

“This new rule provides the framework we need to restore and manage our forests and watersheds while getting work done on the ground and providing jobs,” said Vilsack.  “The collaboration that drove this rulemaking effort exemplifies the America’s Great Outdoors initiative to foster conservation that is designed by and accomplished in partnership with the American people.”

The USDA and the Forest Service carefully considered over a quarter million comments received on the proposed rule and draft environmental impact statement issued in February to develop today’s final rule, which emphasizes collaboration, sound science and protections for land, water and wildlife.

The final rule strengthens the role of public involvement and dialogue throughout the planning process. It also requires the use of the best available scientific information to inform decisions.

“We are ready to start a new era of planning that takes less time, costs less money, and provides stronger protections for our lands and water”, said U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell.  “This new rule will bring 21st century thinking to a process that is sorely needed to protect and preserve our 193 million acres of amazing forests and grasslands.”

Land management plans under the final rule will include:

• Mandatory components to restore and maintain forests and grasslands.
• Requirements to provide habitat for plant and animal diversity and species conservation. The requirements are intended to keep common native species common, contribute to the recovery of threatened and endangered species, conserve proposed and candidate species, and protect species of conservation concern.
• Requirements to maintain or restore watersheds, water resources, water quality including clean drinking water, and the ecological integrity of riparian areas.
• Requirements for multiple uses, including outdoor recreation, range, timber, watershed, wildlife and fish.
• Requirements to provide opportunities for sustainable recreation, and to take into account opportunities to connect people with nature.
• Opportunities for public involvement and collaboration throughout all stages of the planning process. The final rule provides opportunities for Tribal consultation and coordination with state and local governments and other federal agencies, and includes requirements for outreach to traditionally underrepresented communities.
• Requirements for the use of the best available scientific information to inform the planning process and documentation of how science was used in the plan.
• A more efficient and adaptive process for land management planning, allowing the Forest Service to respond to changing conditions.

Continuing the strong emphasis that has been placed on public engagement throughout this rule-making effort, USDA is forming a Federal Advisory Committee to advise the Secretary and the Chief on implementation of the final rule. The nomination period closed on February 21, 2012 with committee members to be announced this spring.

The Nez Perce and Clearwater National Forests in Idaho, the Chugach National Forest in Alaska, the Cibola National Forest in New Mexico, El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico and California’s Inyo, Sequoia and Sierra National Forests will begin revising their plans using the final rule this spring. These eight national forests were selected because of their urgent need for plan revisions, the importance of the benefits they provide, and the strong collaborative networks already in place.

The mission of the U.S. Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. The agency manages 193 million acres of public land, provides assistance to state and private landowners, and maintains the largest forestry research organization in the world.

USDA works with state, local and Tribal governments and private landowners to conserve and protect our nation’s natural resources – helping preserve our land, and clean our air and water.  President Obama launched the America’s Great Outdoors initiative in 2010 to foster a 21st century approach to conservation that is designed by and accomplished in partnership with the American people.  During the past two years, USDA’s conservation agencies— the U.S. Forest Service, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Farm Service Agency—have delivered technical assistance and implemented restoration practices on public and private lands.  We are working to better target conservation investments: embracing locally driven conservation and entering partnerships that focus on large, landscape-scale conservation.

March 12, 2012 – Rimini Italy – Routech, one of the SCM group’s CNC Router Companies, in collaboration with the Tuscany Region and the University of Bologna, has developed Ecoprogram, a project to improve the energy efficiency of machines for manufacturing and their energy labels.

The project started in January 2009 and was completed in January 2012.  These are the reached goals: managing the energy flow, reduction of energy demand in woodworking and packaging machineries and certification of environmental sustainability.
